Marsala Florio, “extraordinary” wines: an array of honors for Donna Franca and Aegusa

Ogni anno le migliori Guide dei Vini italiani e il prestigioso The Wine Advocate – magazine bimestrale americano fondato da Robert Parker, il critico enologo più influente nel mondo internazionale del vino – assegnano i premi più importanti in ambito enologico, in grado di decretare il successo di un’etichetta.

Nel 2019 Florio ha convinto tutti i critici e gli addetti al settore, ricevendo numerosi riconoscimenti con due vini d’eccellenza: il marsala Donna Franca e la riserva Aegusa.

Every year leading Italian Wine Guides and The Wine Advocate, a prestigious U.S. bimonthly magazine founded by Robert Parker (the international wine world’s most influential oenologist/critic), assign key awards in the sector. They are awards that can make or break the success of a label.

In 2019 Florio convinced all the wine critics and insiders and came away with an array of honors for two excellent products: Donna Franca marsala wine and Aegusa reserve wine.

Donna Franca rappresenta pienamente la modernità e la complessità del marsala: è il risultato di blend di diversi marsala maturati separatamente e selezionati attentamente.

  • 4 VITI – massimo riconoscimento della LA GUIDA VINI 2020 VITAE (Associazione Italiana Sommelier)
  • 1 CORONA – massimo riconoscimento della GUIDA VINI BUONI D’ITALIA 2020 – Touring Club Italiano. Donna Franca ha inoltre sempre ricevuto LA CORONA DEL PUBBLICO assegnata dalle Commissioni parallele di Winelovers, Giornalisti e Operatori del Settore
  • 5 GRAPPOLI: massimo riconoscimento della GUIDA BIBENDA 2020
  • 6° POSTO nella Classifica dei 50 Best Italian Wine Awards (BIWA 2019)
  • PUNTEGGIO DI 94/100 decretato dalla rivista THE WINE ADVOCATE

Donna Franca, which captures in full the modernity and complexity of marsala, comes from a blend of keenly selected and separately aged marsala wines. 

Its lusciously warm and mellow flavor makes Donna Franca a great wine for meditation purposes, perfect also along with dessert or for a gourmet aperitif.

Here below is the list of recent honors and awards it has won:

  • 4 VITI – highest honor from LA GUIDA VINI 2020 VITAE (Italian Sommelier Association)
  • 1 CORONA  – highest honor from the 2020 GUIDA VINI BUONI D’ITALIA (Good Wines of Italy Guide) – Italian Touring Club. Also, Donna Franca has always received “LA CORONA DEL PUBBLICO” award assigned in parallel by the Winelovers, Journalists and Industry Insiders Commissions
  • 5 GRAPPOLI: highest honor from the 2020 GUIDA BIBENDA (Bibenda Guide)
  • 6th PLACE winner on the list of 50 Best Italian Wine Awards (BIWA 2019)
  • SCORE of 94/100 as rated by THE WINE ADVOCATE magazine 


Si difende bene anche Aegusa, rara Riserva Florio, prodotta solo con l’annata migliore del decennio. Si contraddistingue per le mille sfumature di spezie e frutta e il suo gusto minerale, sorprendentemente lungo e complesso, di radice di liquirizia e miele bruciato.

I millesimi che sono stati premiati sono:

  • AEGUSA FLORIO 1994: è stato selezionato tra i migliori Vini Dolci da GUIDE DE L’ESPRESSO 2020
  • AEGUSA FLORIO 1964: premiata come GRANDE VINO da GUIDA SLOW WINE 2020
  • RISERVA AEGUSA 1974: ha ottenuto un punteggio di 96/100 assegnato da WINE ADVOCATE

Another winner is the rare Florio Aegusa Reserve wine, which is produced only in the best vintage year of the decade. Its marks of distinction include the endless spice and fruit nuances and its surprisingly lingering, complex liquorice root and burnt honey mineral flavor.

The bottles receiving special honors are the following:

  • AEGUSA FLORIO 1994: selected as one of the best Sweet Wines by the 2020 GUIDE DE L’ESPRESSO 
  • AEGUSA FLORIO 1964: honored as a GREAT WINE in the 2020 SLOW WINE GUIDE 
  • AEGUSA RESERVE 1974: rated with an outstanding 96/100 score by THE WINE ADVOCATE
