La scrittrice Stefania Auci, in occasione della presentazione del libro alle Cantine Florio di Marsala lo scorso giugno, ci ha raccontato la nascita del suo romanzo in un’intervista.

Gracing the heights of the 2019 Italian bestseller list, “I Leoni di Sicilia” (The Lions of Sicily) by Stefania Auci is a novel that delves into and depicts the shadows and lights of the Florio family. In particular, against the backdrop of a vibrant early-19th century Sicily, it tells the magnificent and compelling story of a family destined for success and for all the contradictions of the same thanks to the ambition and the intuition of two young brothers, Ignazio and Paolo Florio.

In an interview on the occasion of the presentation of the book at the Cantine Florio (wine cellars) in Marsala, Sicily, last June, the author Stefania Auci gave us some insight into what inspired her to write the novel.

Stefania, come mai ha voluto scrivere un libro sulla famiglia Florio?

Perché dopo una chiacchierata con un mio amico a Castellammare del Golfo, la voglia di mettermi alla prova con una storia nuova, complicata, e di ampio respiro mi è sembrata una prospettiva nuova, che mi permettesse di pensare a una grande storia e perché no, anche molto sfidante. Questa è la risposta standard. La risposta onesta? …. Perché sono pazza!

Stefania, why did you want to write a book about the Florio family?

Because after a conversation with one of my friends in the town of Castellammare del Golfo, I got the urge to put myself to the test with a new, wide-ranging and complicated story, one that would give me the chance to deal with, and why not? try to the meet the challenge of a gloriously fascinating story. It seemed like a good idea. But the real answer is that I’m crazy!

La famiglia Florio non ha solo costruito le Cantine Florio ma ha dato un contributo fondamentale alla diffusione del marsala, un vino tuttora modernissimo. Cosa prova a presentare il suo libro proprio alle Cantine Florio, dove questo vino viene ancora conservato e prodotto?

Brividi. Quando son entrata nelle cantine, ormai più di due anni fa, da semplice visitatrice, mi sono chiesta per un istante cosa potesse essere presentare lì il libro su cui già stavo cominciando ad affaticarmi. Ecco, ora questo è diventato realtà. Ed è una cosa che fa tremare i polsi.

The Florio family not only built the Cantine Florio, they made a fundamental contribution to popularizing marsala, a sweet wine that is amazingly modern even today. How does it feel to present your book right here at the Florio cellars, where this wine is still made and preserved?

It’s very exciting for me. When I first entered the cellars over two years ago, as a mere visitor, for an instant I wondered what it would be like to present the book here, a book I had already begun working on. And now it’s become a reality. It’s something that thrills me to pieces.
